The Procedure Itself:
The GUMS Procedure is a series of three treatments that are performed at 3-4 week intervals. Prior to treatment, the patient will be instructed on the best brushing and flossing techniques to use throughout their dental appointment. Next, Dr. Stanley will remove any plaque buildup from the gum line and apply an anesthetic gel that will numb the area to prevent discomfort during treatment. Finally, he will use a special tool called a scaler to evenly abrade away any excess gum tissue while reshaping the gum line for a more uniform appearance.
The first part of this process removes plaque buildup around the tooth’s gum line, which can lead to gingivitis if left untreated. This then leads to inflammation and bleeding that can result in receding gums over time.
