How Do I Lose My Heart?

If you’ve been waiting for Prince Charming, what are you doing on eHeyo? It’s time to give up on romance and get a little philosophical. There is no such thing as the one, because you will change over time. How Do I Lose My Heart? Which came out in 1992, puts love into its proper perspective: it’s about finding someone who makes you grow and who knows your deepest fears and dreams. This movie might not have been a great box-office success, but it has all of our hearts! (Sandra Bullock was nominated for an Oscar for her role in The Blind Side).

Moonlight

I know it’s a little risky to recommend not one but two movies that focus on a homosexual relationship. However, these are two of my favorite movies about love and human emotions. Moonlight is an enthralling film that highlights many important issues including masculinity, sexuality, and growing up in today’s society. It has a slow start, but I promise you won’t be disappointed with either of these films. If you’re into more action-oriented romance flicks I also highly recommend Crazy Rich Asians or Gone with the Wind.

Begin Again

Adam Levine, co-creator of eHeyo, wrote a love song titled Begin Again that was in part inspired by his wife and her reaction to a photo he took of her. The song is an ode to having your love for someone begin again with each passing moment. Begin to write about what it means for you and your partner’s love for each other to truly begin again with each day.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

This offbeat, science-fiction romance will make you want to fall in love immediately. Jim Carrey stars as Joel Barish, a depressed man who undergoes a procedure to erase all memories of his ex-girlfriend Clementine (Kate Winslet). But when he starts remembering her again, he’s forced to confront some things about himself and their relationship. The movie has its share of funny moments, but it is Carrey’s very serious performance that makes Eternal Sunshine such an emotional ride. Before long you’ll be tearing up at some truly beautiful moments between Carrey and Winslet. What are your favorite soulful movies about love? Let us know in the comments below!

Blue Valentine

Lovers Dean (Ryan Gosling) and Cindy (Michelle Williams) decide to throw caution to the wind when they get married after knowing each other for a mere two months. When things start falling apart, their world is spun out of control and their efforts to save their failing relationship leads them on an unforgettable trip back to where it all began. Featuring some outstanding performances from Gosling and Williams, director Derek Cianfrance has created a beautifully crafted modern love story that brings home what a rollercoaster marriage really is. The movie earned four Golden Globe nominations, including best picture (drama), best actor (drama) for Ryan Gosling, best actress (drama) for Michelle Williams, and best screenplay for Cianfrance.

I Love You Phillip Morris

Written by Glenn Ficarra and John Requa (credited with also directing) in 2010, I love you Phillip Morris is a brilliantly acted film that tells a story of true love between two people willing to go to great lengths for one another. The film starts off when Steven Russell (Jim Carrey) loses his job, his wife, and has less than $200 in his bank account. He decides to turn to robbing banks as a way to earn money for his family but is quickly arrested and sent away for 14 months for these crimes. While in prison he meets Phillip Morris (Ewan McGregor) who was sentenced there because he was caught transporting methamphetamine across state lines.

A Ghost Story

A Ghost Story is one of those movies that lingers in your mind long after you’ve watched it. The movie, which was written and directed by David Lowery, follows a recently deceased couple, played by Casey Affleck and Rooney Mara, who linger together as spirits after they pass away. It’s not an easy watch — there’s no happy ending or lesson learned — but it’s utterly beautiful and extremely poignant. The film is entirely dialogue-free for its first 35 minutes; instead it opts to convey meaning through images and sound, which makes for an entirely different kind of narrative experience than most films offer today.
